Revenge of the 90’s: New Sonic Figures Go Back to the ‘Hog’s Roots
The Sonic the Hedgehog of today is quite different from the one seen throughout the 90’s as the flagship title and mascot for SEGA’s Genesis and Game Gear platforms. And while SEGA may be content to leave the older version of Sonic in the past (at least visually, depending on how you rate Sonic 4‘s retro value), First 4 Figures is clearly intent on keeping memories of the original alive, which I detail in the following article at RipTen:
Sonic Gets Back to His Roots with New Mini-Figures
Incidentally, I’m not too particular in my Sonic preferences, at least where character models are concerned. I like both, and quite a bit. Heck, having the “classic” character model in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 would even make for a fun addition, sort of like including a “Steamboat Willie” version of Mickey Mouse in some game of his.
Come to think of it, Nintendo seems to like doing similar things by including retro Mario sprites wherever they can in his games… and others, too. They even run around whenever you download something on the Wii Shop Channel!
Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, on the other hand? I definitely prefer the modern version. He just looks so darn snazzy in that outfit.
