AEW Magazine for April 13, 2021
Okay, so this week’s is coming in a little later than usual. In truth, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to do it at all, as while the photographs I received from last week’s AEW Dynamite were great as always, the best ones for the biggest moments of the show had a small problem…
They were horizontally oriented. Which, I mean, they all are, but these were really horizontally oriented. I had to play around with these a bit to get them to fit the vertically-oriented magazine cover format in a way I liked, and in the end, I’m still a little unsure. I’ll let you be the judge of whether they hit the mark or not.
First up, we’ve got “Iron” Mike Tyson back and standing with the Inner Circle.
Not going to lie, Mike Tyson isn’t exactly my favorite person on Earth, but objectively speaking, it’s hard to deny that was one of the biggest moments on Dynamite last week. So, here we are.
This one cuts out some of the Inner Circle more than I’d like, but still manages to get the focus in the right place. I’d also hoped to get more of a metallic look on the “Iron Mike Strikes Back” text, but didn’t really have time to figure it out. (In case you’re wondering, I’ve got another big project I’m working on, so that might cut into some things like this. Going to try to find a good balance, though.) That was actually my fallback, as I originally wanted to mimic the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back logo, but figuring that out would unfortunately take more time than I really had to spare on this.
None of these are great excuses, I know, and if I was actually being paid to produce a magazine, it would be a different story. Maybe I’ll revisit this one some time, we’ll see.
Here’s the other one I liked a little more at first, but my wife thought the first one was better.
This moment, when the Young Bucks turned on Jon Moxley, was my first choice for a cover, but this might be my least favorite of the lot. The first one had that horizontal issue I was talking about, but this one really has it — to the point that you can’t even see who Mox is holding to warrant getting superkicked. I could have pulled out more, but that would have left a lot more dead space — the photo actually cuts off right beneath the rectangle in the AEW logo (the top of the first cover pic above cuts off, too). This was about as good as I could get it without more messing around.
There’s a stacked card for AEW Dynamite tomorrow night, their first regular show in the slot without the competition from WWE NXT, so it should be interesting to see what images and stories it yields.
Thanks for reading!
Photographs used for the AEW covers were provided by All Elite Wrestling. Everything else but the barcode and AEW logo (including the “Magazine” logo) was all me.
