Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX Release Info Finally Revealed
Last June, it was announced at IGN’s Summer of Gaming showcase that SEGA would be teaming with Merge Games to bring the work of a group of fan game creators to market as an official product. Known as Jankenteam, the group is working on an update/remake of SEGA’s early 8-bit title, Alex Kidd in Miracle World called Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX.
I wrote about the announcement for Mega Visions at the time, noting that there were promises of adding new levels, story elements, and modes (including a boss rush), as well as altering boss fight systems and tweaking combat, movement mechanics (“tighter, more fluid controls,” per IGN), and menu systems. Oh, and you can toggle between the new high definition or original 8-bit graphics at the press of a button!
After nine months of waiting (and as a big Alex Kidd fan, let me tell you, I’ve been on the edge of my seat for anything to come up), IGN would once again be the ones to give us what we want with regards to a new trailer and info:
This new trailer gives us a look at some of the villainous minions of Janken the Great, as well as some of the story that’s being expanded upon a bit versus the original game’s presentation.
Doesn’t the sight of that just break your heart?
We also see Alex traversing the sky atop some sort of cane? I think that’s new. And we get a look at some of the other bosses, including my favorite, the sword-wielding blue Grizzly Bear!
Along with the trailer, a bunch of new screens (that weren’t from me screencapping the video) were released, too. Check ’em out:
The game is going to be released on June 24th for $19.99 USD (roughly $25.05 CAD* converted), and will be available on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
That is, if you’re going digital with it.
For those of us who love to put our favorite titles on a shelf, Signature Edition Games is releasing physical copies as well. If you go for the Standard Edition ($43.47 CAD/about $34.47 USD* for Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, $52.17 CAD/about $41.36 USD for Nintendo Switch), you’ll get a region-free copy of the game for your platform of choice, a manual, and a keyring. Neat!
Or, if you’re like me and have been suffering from the dearth of Alex Kidd merch and memorabilia over the last 35 years, you can go for the Signature Edition…
With $86.95 CAD/about $68.94 USD for the Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, or $95.65 CAD/about $75.84 USD for the Nintendo Switch, you get a whole box of goodies, including: a region-free physical copy of the game with manual and keyring (as per the Standard Edition), a CD soundtrack (featuring the newly remastered music), three enamel pins (depicting Alex piloting vehicles over land and sea and air, like A Real American Hero), Alex Kidd’s medallion and a felt bag, a Jankenpon (Rock, Paper, Scissors) card game, a numbered certificate with the developers’ signatures, a The Art Behind Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX book, and a collector’s box with alternate cover art to keep it all in (if you’re not displaying it).
If you haven’t seen the original reveal trailer, you can check that out right here:
June 24th just can’t get here soon enough.
Thanks for reading!
* Sorry for the inconsistent pricing, all I’ve got to work with is what I’m given and a currency converter.
